Ski - opening day 2005
Washington ski areas have received a ridiculous amount of snow last weekend. Here are some pics from Mt. Baker on opening day, Nov 8.
We went skiing to Crystal on Sunday and despite all the skiers swarming looking for some early season skiing, conditions were great. Found some areas of less-tracked snow.
There was news of 4 inbounds slides. Mace talked to the Crystal Mt Ski Patrol Director, Paul Baugher and got this info:
1-3 in a freshly controlled area:
- Skier caught in Powder Bowl. Tib/Fib fracture. Patint very anxious about her condition and the deteriorating environment - wind, snow, dark, cold
- Patrol responder to #1 caught and lost equipment
Darkness falls, winds hit 50 mph. Chair 6 closed due to wind. Rescuers needed to hike up. - Patrol in technical rescue (lowering of victim in #1) caught and lost equipment.
What a great example of repeated releases in rapid succession - Witnessed, natural release overran Kelly’s Gap Road. Had to bring in avalanche dogs and probe to see if any skiers had been caught or swept.
And finally,
There was also a complete burial at Mt Baker over the weekend. Here’s some news about it on TAY.
Be careful out there.
