laptop update

It’s been a while since I’ve updated you about my laptop. After partitioning my drive, I popped in the ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy) disk and started it up. Following the same directions to get past the black screen at startup, the setup was very similar to the debian startup. Since ubuntu is based off of debian, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. However, the last time I installed debian, I had to select all of the packages I wanted myself. This time, I chose the standard installation and planned on using apt to get everything I needed.

The installation was painless. I didn’t have to do anything special for it to be a usable system. There are a few things to do to get the touchpad fully functioning but in general everything was working as expected. The setup even recognized the built-in wireless card and was able to configure it so there was connectivity during the installation.

One of the first things I did was install kubuntu with “sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop” and I got a nice, full-featured KDE desktop that is perfect with ubuntu. This was a useful page to get all of your favorite media formats working.

I found the ubunti wiki to be very helpful while learning about all of the caveats of a new distribution. Overall, I’ve been very impressed with ubuntu and I’m looking forward to using it as my main OS.

ubuntu kicks ass. if linux ever leaves the halls of absolute geeks it’ll be because of ubuntu. i’d feel comfortable giving my mom an ubuntu setup (actually - I’d feel more comfortable with a newby on ubuntu than windoz).

lucky you… i still can’t get my wireless working though (when it doesn’t work on linux it REALLY doesn’t work)
