Rivalries
I managed to catch the Bayer Leverkusen vs Dortmund match this past week. I was surprised by the attendance there. In a stadium holding 30,000 fans, 7,000 seats were taken by the visiting team. In MLS, there's a limit of 500 seats to traveling fans. While this limit is hardly reached for most games throughout the league, here in the PNW, the rivalries between SEA, VAN, and PDX can easily draw that number of away fans. At the CLink especially, we have approximately 30k tarped seats during league games. Through conversations with friends, it seems reasonable to be able to open upper-deck sections to visiting fans. If security is a concern, separate ramps/stairwells and restrooms can be provided. But the real question is how do European clubs manage the away fan hordes without many incidents? I, for one, would welcome 8k screaming Portland fans in addition to the 36k Sounders fans in Seattle. We have the capacity. Seems Timbers fans have the desire. Would be an incredible atmosphere for our big rivalry games. Besides, Adrian should now have enough empty money sacks after USOC bids to stuff with the money from those extra tickets sold. Come on, Sounder FO, let's make this happen.
